As BorisM noted, this is kitsch (if even that). It has very little to do with true steampunk aesthetic and more to do with people cobbling useless junk together into non-functional forms and passing it off as something trendy. It's noteworthy that on the book's back cover, the publisher advertises _1,000 Ideas for Creative Reuse_ and another "make things out of junk" book called _Who's Your Dada_, which, judging by its cover, is also a book about making art from "found objects" rather than about Dadaism.

There are some interesting pieces in the book, but they're few. The author apparently doesn't understand that steampunk is not about slapping old pieces of metal together or making "costumes" that have more gimmicks than actual period clothing or style. Actual function is large part of steampunk aesthetic, as is a rejection of modern plastic design for the more pleasing use of brass and wood (and other materials).

I've seen the style of the art in this book in the 1990s, where it took on a grunge patina rather than stealing the form (over substance) from steampunk. Basically, its out-of-work art school graduates who believe that anything they put together is Art and we should all be in awe of it and their talent. Oddly, most people who make interesting and aesthetically pleasing steampunk items are engineers and technicians, not the sloppy "lookit me!" scene parasites that overpopulate this book, crowding out the few photos in the book of anyone creating something actually interesting.

1 000 Steampunk Creations NeoVictorian Fashion Gear and Art 1000 Series Dr Grymm Barbe Saint John 9781592536917 Books Reviews

Gives a big selection of the Steampunk world. Learned what goes into making an item Steampunk. Good for inspiration for creating your own Steampunk statement. Reads much like a sales catalog. Would have liked more discussion of the Steampunk world. Recommend for the curious and those looking for Steampunk gear and fashion.
Great!!
I really wish I would have read reviews before buying this. I thought they would have had some DIY instructions but it's just pics. I do like some of the items though. The shipping was quick and the book was in perfect condition.
If I could have only ONE steampunk book, THIS IS THE ONE I'D OWN. A SUPER COMPENDIUM! If you
can afford it, buy all of the Steampunk books; if you can't, this book covers almost everything. Make this your
FIRST Steampunk book.
This is a lovely picture book of the state of Steampunk at the time of publication. There's clothing, home decor, weapons, art and dustcatchers. Some of these images have escaped onto Pinterest or other websites, but there will be much you have not seen before. There are no instructions, but some of the projects are well-illustrated enough for inspiration. Just don't let the level of craftsmanship make you feel that you can't make fabulous stuff too.
This is the best steampunk picture book by far. If you want a lot of text and history on steampunk, this isn't the one you want. But if you want scores and scores of high resolution photos of great steampunk works of 3-D art, this is the only one you need. Out of several steampunk books I have, this one is my favorite, just packed with pictures, and steampunk is, if nothing else, a very visual medium, whose work stirs the imagination. If you want text, get another book, if you want the best representaiton of what people are creating, this one is the definitive one.
Very stimulating book giving you ideas and many different creators and artist giving you different Vantage points on creating steampunk
