I enjoyed this a good bit. Devin, the hero, is a retired rock star. It's a forced retirement because he's damaged his organs with alcohol so much the doctor told him another drink will kill him. He's decided to leave the L.A. music scene and return home to New Zealand to attend school and be near his mother (who recently suffered heart problems). Devin is not quite a part of the normal world. He's used to fan adoration. He longs to be unrecognized, but doesn't really know what to do when someone treats him like any random normal person. Rachel, the heroine, is a librarian. She seems repressed and rather stodgy. I really don't think she is. I think she makes herself emotionally unavailable in an effort to protect herself. I also think she is very aware of all the various vices in the world and clearly sees their potential for damage. Anyway, she has no idea who Devin is and it's quite refreshing. I found the dialog witty and sarcastic. I enjoyed seeing them meet and develop feelings for each other. There was one sex scene and it was rather short and non-descriptive. The only complaint I really have is that it wasn't a very happy story overall. There was character development and pretty reasonable behavior between the characters, but they didn't share many happy times. There was mostly tension, conflict or suspicion of ulterior motives. It might have been nice to have an extended ending - a way to experience the characters sharing happier times.Tags : Amazon.com: What the Librarian Did (9780373716227): Karina Bliss: Books,Karina Bliss,What the Librarian Did,Harlequin Superromance,0373716222,Love stories.,Rock musicians;Fiction.,Women librarians;Fiction.,10012335,1153749,1622,20100301,706848,AUSTRALIAN NOVEL AND SHORT STORY,Bad Boy;Celebrity;Commitment phobia;Deception;Different Worlds;Divided loyalties;Family;Humor;Opposites Attract;Passion;Past Secrets;Personal Issues;Playboy hero;Rebel hero;scarred heroine;Second Chance;Secret Child;Secrets;Vulnerable child,Canada,FICTION Romance Contemporary,FICTION Romance General,Fiction,Fiction - Romance,Fiction-Romance,General Adult,MASS MARKET,Monograph Series, any,Rock musicians,Romance - Contemporary,RomanceModern,Romance: Modern,Women librarians
What the Librarian Did Karina Bliss Books Reviews
It was a quick, easy read. It was sweet. The characters are decent and you want them to work it out.
This book kicked off the Rock Solid series as standing alone.
Not much to this. Poor characters and worse storyline. Read less than 25%. Did not finish. Don’t waste your time.
This book was recommended to me, and when I saw it was a Harlequin, I almost didn't buy it. I am so glad I did. It is a beautiful slow romance that shows how two opposites, both with baggage, slowly heals and finds love. I liked how the author slowly exposes the past of all the characters, and shows how it is holding them back from making a future. I know the new trend in books are fast, hot, instance attraction love stories, but I think the quiet romance in this story is much more poignant and true to life.
I fell in love with Devin, a guy who is a recovering addict....his lifestyle being the drug of choice. Realizing he will die if he doesn't make a change he goes home to be with his mom....who is recovering from a heart condition. He enrolls in college as a start to a new life, and to help him develop the skills to figure out his finances. Lucky for him, he runs into Rachel, a woman who is hiding from life as a self punishment for her past. Because of some painful events that happened when she was a teen, she refuses to get emotionally involved with anyone else to save her from any further pain. Also thrown into the mix are well meaning friends, and a teen looking for his birth mother.
I really loved this book and would recommend it. I plan on reading the next book in the series about Devin's bad boy, selfish brother. It will be interesting to see how she can redeem him. I think it may take a miracle.
This is a sneaky emotionial read that deals with heavy topics. You think you are getting a Rocker and the Librarian fluff and instead you get POW the need for self forgiveness in order to find love.
Set in New Zealand, we have wonderful carefully drawn characters who are more likely lovers than they first appear. We have the problems with fame for a private person. Each lead is so much themselves that we understand why each is attracted to the love and why it so hard to come together.
A wonderful read! It will take the bad taste of all the poorly done Rock Star Romances right your mouth.
A relief to read something written before the 50 Shades of Gray era. This is a classic venture of Sex, Drugs, Rockin Roll and even some old school nylon bondage!
Rachel's character development throughout this story is fascinating. Polar opposite ends of the personality spectrum untie in this classic rendition of when a good girl meets a bad boy.
I recommend this book for anyone who wants a good old fashion story about rockstars falling in love with librarians who are smarter than the doting eyed average groupie. This was an insightful and delightful read.
I had no idea when I bought this, that this was the prelude to the books about the Rage band members ("Rise" and "Fall"). The H in "Rise" is this H's brother. He is one of the original band members but he's quit and decided to go to university back in New Zealand. He meets the h at the campus library where she is a librarian. She has just broken things off with yet another fiance and the H witnesses the ex's impassioned plea to the h. The main characters are an unlikely match, and boy does the h give the H a run for his money. The h has loads of secrets and she's scarred by her past. It's difficult to give a good summary without giving some of the plot away. I think I could have lived without reading this story as it was too angsty for me. I also didn't find the h to be a sympathetic character. There's not very much sexual content in this book. I think that if you like the "Rage" series then you might want to read this one.
